MUSIC—It was 10 Halloweens ago that folk/punk/busker band the Builders and the Butchers performed their first show, and a decade later, they're still one of the most entertaining bands in town. BOOKS—Sure, we had Sassy back in the stone ages, but Cute Band Alerts don't hold a candle to Editor in Chief Tavi Gevinson's amazing Rookie magazine. She celebrates the release of Yearbook Four today, a sizeable compendium of useful, artful, and entertaining articles that include interviews with Laverne Cox and TLC and tutorials on fake fur sandals and writing a college admissions essay. MUSIC—L7 has been around longer than most of you reading this preview. Donita Sparks and Suzi Gardner formed the LA band in 1985, and now the punk ladies of L7 are on a reunion tour after a 14-year hiatus. MUSIC—Ahhhh, Vetiver. The medicinally named indie folk project from San Francisco singer/songwriter Andy Cabic is the aural equivalent of sitting inside under a pile of blankets on a cold, misty day. MUSIC—It's easy to take Patty Griffin for granted.
